Quick Start — APAC

This region covers Japan, Australia, Singapore, South Korea, and Hong Kong. Built for teams managing recovered equipment, reuse, and cross-border movement across Asia-Pacific.

1.Welcome

If you are a small business shipping equipment across borders, you already know the plan can look fine on paper and still fall apart once a unit comes out of service, gets delayed in customs, or costs more to move than it is worth.

This is not meant to read like a policy manual. It is meant to help you think clearly, make cleaner decisions, and give your business a practical way to handle recovery, reuse, trade-in, local support, and next-step movement without getting lost in the process.

Sometimes the best answer is to ship the asset out. Sometimes it is smarter to recover it locally, route it to a small hub, reuse it in-region, trade it in, or retire it cleanly.

2.Cradle-to-Grave Asset Recovery

Cross-border asset recovery works best when managed as a cradle-to-grave process, not as a one-time shipping event. The asset should stay visible from deployment through customer use, recovery, sanitization, movement, reuse, resale, trade-in, recycling, or final disposition, with an auditable chain of custody and clear records at each handoff.

When organizations lose sight of that chain, problems multiply: equipment left at customer premises, stored without approval, moved without documentation, treated incorrectly at export or disposal, or diverted into unauthorized resale channels — creating compliance failures, financial leakage, data-security exposure, and reputational damage.

In APAC, this matters because environmental controls, import restrictions, and handling expectations vary significantly by country, and the Basel Convention regional programme for Asia-Pacific emphasizes environmentally sound management, detailed inventories, customs and enforcement training, and prevention of illegal traffic in e-waste.

Simple Operating Rule: If the business cannot show where the asset went, who handled it, how it was sanitized, what decision was made, and how the final disposition was completed, then the recovery process is not complete.

3.How to Use This Toolkit

Use this toolkit in the same order your business would handle the work:

  1. Understand the situation.
  2. Review the country and shipment context.
  3. Decide whether to export, hold locally, reuse, trade in, or dispose.
  4. Make sure the asset is clean, documented, and ready for the next step.
  5. Control inventory, testing, and handoff.

You do not need to use every page every time. The point is not to make the process heavier. The point is to make the next move easier.
